Heritage
Contemporary culture has challenged the claim that America’s heritage has been greatly influenced by the Bible and Christianity. What is Heritage? Heritage is something that passes from one generation to the next in a social group, e.g. a way of life or traditional culture. King David said, “The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage.” – Psalm 16:6. The lines refer to his borders, his homeland, and his nation. As David, we should consider it a good heritage to live where the true God is known; where we enjoy His favor and friendship.
For the Christian living in America, our heritage includes a NATIONAL heritage that has a Biblical foundation. As Supreme Court Justice David Brewer (1837-1910) explained: … America was “of all the nations in the world . . . most justly called a Christian nation” because Christianity “has so largely shaped and molded it.” It has brought us the blessings of righteousness. Solomon said, “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.” – Proverbs 14:34 This heritage includes a PERSONAL heritage that has the blessing of salvation, To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. – Acts 26:18 This heritage also includes a SPIRITUAL heritage that rests upon the inspired word of God, Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart. – Psalm 119:111, and adds the fellowship of the saints, For thou, O God, hast heard my vows: thou hast given me the heritage of those that fear thy name. – Psalm 61:5 This is a heritage that should be recognized and retained.
