Mediums and Contacting the Dead

The television show, Long Island Medium, says it follows the life of a medium named Theresa, “helping clients and delivering messages from the deceased to people she encounters in various public places, from grocery stores and cleaners to bowling alleys and frozen yogurt shops.”

So what is a medium? Webster says, “an individual held to be a channel of communication between the earthly world and a world of spirits.” The medium is the witch, the “consulter of familiar spirits” (Deut.18:11) in the Bible. Leviticus 19:31; 20:6, 27; and Deuteronomy 18:9-14 refer to “witch” and “familiar spirits” and forbids being involved with them. A medium is one who acts as a liaison to supposedly contact or communicate with the dead on behalf of the living. In reality mediums are contacting demons, called “spirit guides” by the medium, who convince the mediums that they are “familiar” and can be trusted and believed. The practices of those with familiar spirits (mediums) were banned in Israel, and the punishment for practicing such things was death (Lev.20:27).

Therefore, familiar spirits are under the control of Satan. They influence people to spread lies and deceit. Some ways in which people expose themselves to "familiar spirits" (demons) are divination, transcendental meditation, visualization, necromancy, witchcraft, drugs, and alcohol. These are all activities that believers are exhorted to avoid. Our warfare is against “spiritual wickedness” (Eph.6:11-18). Instead, we are to be filled with the Holy Spirit and walk in the Spirit; the result will be the “fruit of the Spirit” in the life of the believer (Gal.5).
